The ransomware epidemic has hit educational institutions extremely hard. This is particularly relevant to the Humber-based academic trust, The Education Alliance, which knew it needed a reliable way to protect their students – and fast.

“It’s difficult to protect educational institutions and being an organisation comprised of close to 7,000 people, there’s a lot that can go wrong,” says Matt Wadsworth, IT Director at The Education Alliance. “All it takes is one wrong click”.

In their search for a solution, The Education Alliance came across Mimecast. It didn’t take Wadsworth long to see that a single comprehensive package would help secure their students’ educational experience. 

The Education Alliance went with a Mimecast package that included email security, URL Protection, attachment protection, and awareness training, among other benefits. 

The benefits of the package kicked in pretty fast. Not long after installation, a student clicked on a malicious link. It got through the gateway – but Mimecast’s link protection blocked it from progressing any further. 

 “It’s amazing that with Mimecast URL Protect you can directly block URLs and suddenly become aware of a domain in a link,” Wadsworth says. “Being able to easily block a domain in a URL is an important feature.”
