ChatGPT: Economic saviour or environmental nightmare?
A recent article in the Investors Chronicle explored the potential for AI to remedy current economic woes. The article argued that while demand for AI-powered productivity solutions was previously low, rising wages and supply chain challenges have created a new urgency for businesses to adopt AI. It chews over everything from the ethical conundrum of a possible decimation of the human workforce to cyber attacks. Notably absent was the impact of the technology on the environment. We’ll draw your attention back to a chart from Stanford University’s AI Index Report in April this year, showing that systems like Chat GPT emit 502 tonnes of carbon in training runs alone. Or the equivalent emissions of over 500 trips from New York to San Francisco.
